How to Avoid Hitting Wildlife on the Road

Watch For Signs

Yellow diamond shaped road signs warn drivers of wildlife that frequent the area and let you know to be cautious. These signs are placed in high collision risk areas so do not disregard them.

Don’t Speed

Be sure to obey the speed limit. Wildlife vehicle collisions often occur on clear nights, dry road conditions and long straight stretches when drivers are most likely to speed.

Drive Defensively

Actively watch for wildlife on the road or side of the road. At night, look out for shining eyes in the dark as your headlights will reflect off an animal’s eyes. Also, pay attention to flickering lights of an oncoming vehicle or the vehicle in front, and roadside reflectors that disappear/reappear as that may be an animal crossing.

Studies show that problem locations for wildlife collisions are where creeks intersect roads, areas where there is good roadside habitat nearby, and long straight stretches so pay attention to the landscape.

If You See Wildlife

If there is wildlife on the side of the road, slow down so you can react quickly if they should dart out in front of you. If an animal does run out into the road, swerve only if you are not able to brake in time and if it is safe to do so. Often swerving can pose a greater danger than hitting a deer as you may hit another vehicle or flip over in the ditch. In the case of a moose, swerving is typically the best option as they can weigh up to 1,200 lbs and hitting them carries a significant risk of injury or death.

If A Collision Is Inevitable

In some circumstances, you have no choice but to hit the animal. If this is the case, look in the direction you want to go and not at the animal as the vehicle tends to go where you look. Brake firmly and quickly, and steer your vehicle to strike the animal at an angle. Let up on the brake just before you hit as this will cause the front end of your vehicle to rise, reducing the chances of the animal coming through your windshield.

Check out the Wildlife Collision Prevention Program’s website for more information.
